Pirate Island
Pirates have been part of Santa Pola’s dramatic history since the 1400s. Among the most notorious was Redbeard, a feared pirate who caused endless trouble along the coast.
Using Tabarca Island, known then as Pirate Island as their base, pirates launched attacks on nearby towns. As Santa Pola was so close, it was an easy target.
By 1557, the people of Santa Pola had had enough. To defend themselves and their town, they built a sturdy castle that still stands today. The castle acted as both a lookout and a place of refuge when the threat of pirates loomed.
Nowadays, Tabarca Island is a peaceful and picturesque spot, perfect for a day trip. With its clear turquoise waters and hidden coves, it’s a dream destination for swimmers and snorkelers. Pack your swimmers, explore the underwater world, or simply relax on the rocky beaches.
